For sure, the introduction of the F20C engine in 1999 was a game changer! Available in various formats to suit the worldwide markets, depending on the specifications it made between 237hp/203Nm and 247hp/21Nm in production vehicles, and a tuned version made 265hp/255Nm. Like it’s predecessor the Honda B18 and B18 engines, the F20C benefits from the Honda VTEC system which is a clever method of doubling an engines effective torque range by introducing an additional long-duration / high-lift camshaft lobe which operates at high engine speed. This enables the engine to have a perfect idle, good low-speed tractability, and still be effective up to the 9000rpm rev limit. Truly remarkable!

There is a well developed tuning path for the S2000/F20C which first removes the exhaust system restriction, then optimised exhaust manifold dimensions, then high-flow intake, then enlarged throttle body. At this point or before it is advisable to optimise the ECU calibration in order to achieve best performance from each upgrade. Once the foundation performance modifications are done, it’s conventional to upgrade the camshafts and valve springs with various types available according to the required engine performance. If further performance is required, Individual Throttle Bodies (ITB’s) should be considered. All of these upgrades work very well but don’t add much in the way of mid-range torque, so if that’s an objective the best way to achieve that without forced induction is by increasing the stroke of the crankshaft.

In standard format the F20C is “over-square” in that the bore size is 87mm and the stroke is quite short at 84mm, so it’s a logical process to increase the stroke to make it perfectly square or beyond. We have to consider aspects such as average and maximum piston speeds, and physical packing of a stroker kit (how much space is available within the cylinder block to accommodate longer-stroke components), as there is always a compromise between maximum torque and maximum engine speed. In our experience the very best quality and performance stroker kits can be see here:
